Education

“Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a rightous man and he will increase in learning.” –Proverbs 9:9

Education is one of the nurturing ministries of the United Methodist Church, and our beliefs put great emphasis on the need for Christian education throughout one’s life. At Yorkville United Methodist Church, our goal is to provide a firm educational foundation, so that the desire to learn will continue into adulthood. There are several interesting and enjoyable ways of gaining a greater understanding of God in our daily lives, with classes designed to fit every need.

Educational programs at Yorkville UMC are coordinated by the Christian Education Team. We hope that there is something that will interest you!

What does Yorkville UMC offer?

Sunday School

“The Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” –John 14:26

Yorkville United Methodist Church encourages you to continue your Christian education by attending one of our many Sunday School classes. Everyone is welcome, from children to adults, and you are sure to find a class that fits your needs and age group.

Classes are held each Sunday during the school year (September through May) from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. Lessons vary according to age, and include Bible study, music, class discussions, crafts and games.

Our children’s Sunday school classes present a Christmas program each December.  Our adult classes offer Christian fellowship and lively discussions of our faith.

If you find you cannot attend Sunday School, there are other options for continuing your Christian education: Confirmation classes, Adult Bible Study, Vacation Bible School or UMC camps.

Sunday School is fun for all ages, and all you have to do is attend! Why not give it a try!

Adult Bible Study

“If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.” –John 8:31

Although it is not a prerequisite, those who enjoy Adult Sunday School often find they are ready for further study. Adult Bible Study is a more intensive study of the Bible with the goal of deepening the student’s relationship with God and making disciples of Christ.

Classes are held periodically and will typically include 6 weekly 1½ to 2 hour sessions. Students are expected to do some independent Bible reading outside of class.

Adult Bible Study is open to anyone! It is encouraged for participants to have a good study Bible. If you are interested, contact us for the next available class!

Confirmation Classes

“…and that by believing you may have life in his name.” –John 20:31

Confirmation classes for youth are held in a one-year format, typically during 7th or 8th grade, with the goal of helping our young people make a decision to confirm their baptism and pledge themselves to Christian living as adults.

The program uses a combination of curriculum, mentoring by a non-parental adult, Sunday School, regular worship, and community service hours to help the students gain an understanding of the Christian life. We hold weekly classes and youth also attend a retreat during the winter months.

Confirmation is usually held on the first Sunday of May, and a new class is started each September.   All 7th graders and older are welcome to attend!
